Chapter 5
Wednesday
When Wednesday night rolled around, she was both nervous and confident. She knew that she was a woman of faith and that she had a good head on her shoulders. In short, she was a catch. Men always considered her externally beautiful, with her thick, naturally kinky hair, her almond shaped eyes, and her voluptuous, toned figure. She was used to turning heads wherever she went.
At the same time, Jasmine’s outer beauty was sometimes tricky to navigate. She had to exercise caution with the men she met, lest she end up in a relationship with someone who only wanted her for her looks. She wanted to look sexy for Caleb, but she also wanted him to know that she was more than just a pretty face, that she was full of dreams and hopes, of ambitions, fears, and desires. She decided to wear an elegant silk sweater with a long, fitted brown skirt. She put on her favorite leather boots and then draped a silk scarf around her neck.
She applied her favorite cherry-red lip-gloss and then tried to decide how she wanted to wear her hair. Lately, she’d been happy with the way her wavy, natural hair looked, so she simply let it go, and then sprayed some of her favorite bergamot and lemongrass perfume on her wrists. She had a feeling that it was going to be a special night, and she wondered if Caleb was nervous like her. She gazed in the mirror and smiled. She liked her appearance and now she simply had to get a grip on the butterflies in her stomach.
She took a few deep breaths and then walked to the door. Before locking up and heading out, she looked at the tiny porcelain angel figure on the shelf by her doorway. It had a quote inscribe beneath its wings that read:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
Jasmine read the quote out loud and then said a little prayer for both her and for Caleb. She hoped that God had good plans for the two of them, and that their night would be both safe and enjoyable. She headed out to her car, a later model BMW that she had bought after the completion of one of her most lucrative design projects. She slid in, started the ignition, and then slowly backed out of the driveway. She could see the lights on inside Toni’s house, and she wondered what kind of drama was circulating now. She took a deep breath and told herself to let it go for the night.
She followed ht directions that Caleb had given her over the phone and arrived at the jazz club right on time. She parked her car and then checked her hair in the mirror a few times. She told herself to just be natural, and then she got out of the car and walked slowly to the door.
